Uncovering the troubling patterns of a public health crisis

It is said that nearly 90 Americans die from Opioid overdose every single day. In the aftermath of this public health emergency that has grappled the nation, various healthcare organizations and government agencies have been pressed to find solutions and investigate processes.

Read how we employed data science to help uncover some important trends and patterns relating to the epidemic from medical health records.

The Problem

In 2019 alone, over 50000 people died from opioid-involved complications in the US. The public health epidemic continues to wreak havoc on families, communities and state finances. It is estimated that over 80% of these individuals began their journey into addiction from the misuse of prescription opioids. To tackle the problem of overprescription, a medical consortium and a leading state university hospital approached Pyramidion to leverage data science and analytics to propose solutions.

The Challenge

The data that was to be used in this project resided in thousands of electronic health records from healthcare providers across the country.

Individual data entries concerning medical condition, patient behavior and history easily were in millions.

Not only did we need a sound strategy to isolate the risk factors, but we also had to keep in mind that the factors could vary depending on variables such as age, gender, geography, etc.

The Outcome

We extracted the data, cleaned it, isolated parameters that were important for our analysis, set conditions, implemented analysis and modeled the data. With the help of a valid and relevant strategy, we were able to deduce the trends that indicated over prescription and the risk factors associated with them.

Our dashboard could help the client trace problematic cases to the individual provider level. Our predictive analytics also enabled them to manage the risk factors better and take precautionary measures.
